Curriculum Statement
One of our cores values at Hillyfield is “Developing Talent” and therefore, we work hard to ensure the children get access to a range of subjects taught to the highest standard. As part of our commitment to giving the children access to a broad and rich curriculum, we employ a range of professionals to cater to the children’s development in the Performing Arts.
All children receive regular curriculum music lessons and we employ a full-time music teacher. Our class activities are always related to their topic of the term, integrating musical learning into the school day, and adding another creative element to their topic learning. Musical learning includes performance, composition and aural based activities, targeting key musical elements throughout the academic year, and giving children the freedom to express themselves creatively, whilst developing knowledge and skills using instruments and voices Children are encouraged to bring instrumental skills they already have to their class music lessons, and those who do not currently learn an instrument are given the opportunity to develop skills using a range of instruments available in the classroom, helping advance independent learning.
We also pride ourselves on offering tuition in many orchestral and non-orchestral instruments. We have our very own team of specialist peripatetic musicians that provide high quality individual and group tuition, leading to affiliated examinations in Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity Guildhall exam boards. There are also opportunities for learners to perform on their instruments in special concerts and assemblies.

Curriculum Statement
At Hillyfield we believe that Dance can play an exciting and leading role in providing dynamic focus for the educational experience of its young people. All children are encouraged and given the freedom to find new ways of learning and expressing themselves creatively through movement and Dance.
Our Dance classes consist of technique exercises, creative time, group work, solo work and most of all fun! During each topic the children will learn dance movements, create their own movement and work with others in either pairs or small groups to choreograph short dances which helps to enhance team building, sharing, and collaborating ideas. Dance also helps to build self-confidence and helps children to mature emotionally by expressing thoughts and ideas in a more practical way.
Dance Events
Across the School we try to create regular opportunities for children to show their dance learning. These include:
Musical Productions
Talent Shows
Dance Clubs
National Dance Competitions
Schemes of Work
At Hillyfield we follow the National Dance Teachers Association guidelines for primary school Dance, which also link to the national PE curriculum. We try to incorporate a range of styles across the curriculum and use different core works to inspire and help students build a strong appreciation for dance performance .
