Science Curriculum Intent
Pupils will develop both scientific knowledge and an understanding of working scientifically, in the context of their local, national & global community, which will be maintained throughout their school life and beyond. We want our pupils to see how the science they study links to real world experiences and how science helps them make connections within their own community.
Subjects knowledge is developed through the following:
- carefully planned sequences of learning and teaching;
- exposure to and regular use of key scientific vocabulary;
- practical/real life experiences of science in action (to enrich and secure knowledge);
- opportunities to experience enquiry-based learning.
By the time pupils leave at the end of key stage 2, they should have a secure understanding of scientific knowledge and concepts, including the role of scientists and innovators and their impact in the scientific world. Female scientists are identified to ensure a fair representation against any preconceived bias and to ensure girls have positive role models within the subject.
Pupils will also learn of the changes in scientific thinking, theory and new discoveries, through accessing a range of media. This will prompt pupils to raise their own questions about the topics and allow them to make links to the world they live in. The opportunity to develop resilience will arise through evaluating their learning and realising that scientists will have anomalies in their work which they will have to investigate. We want to show our pupils the possibilities of continuing science subjects at secondary school and beyond.
