Design and Technology Curriculum Intent
Design & Technology allows pupils to experience the broader curriculum and apply their mathematical, scientific and literacy skills in a practical subject. It encourages and inspires pupils to become independent, exercise their creativity and problem solve as individuals and part of a team. Pupils are encouraged to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Wherever possible, work is linked to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing, and art. Pupils learn to think more of the wider world in which they live in and be inspired to improve it.
The journey of a D&T project allows pupils to acquire and apply skills that they can use and implement themselves in their own lives. It seeks to provide children with a passion for design and innovation and to understand how design and technology innovations and developments have shaped the modern world. Through our scheme of work, we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful, enterprising citizens who will have the skills to contribute to future design advancements.
The D&T progression map outlines how pupils build on previous skills taught. Pupils will also utilise flexible skills such as problem solving, evaluating, having a positive mindset, health and safety, teamwork and reacting to success and failures. Pupils also have opportunities to exercise their speaking and listening skills and allow them to bring in their cultural viewpoints towards the project where necessary. Rich and meaningful links with parents and organisations are made to enrich the D&T curriculum and allow children to understand the real-life application of D&T as well as learn about possible career paths related to the subject.
In cooking and nutrition, Pupils understand the importance of food in their daily lives, where it comes from and acquire skills of being able to make simple meals using kitchen equipment safely. The basic skills of peeling, cutting and grating along with the safety knowledge linked to using equipment are considered as necessary life skills.
